A tragic and highly debated situation has emerged in Spain — one that is reigniting a worldwide discussion about the right to die.
A 25-year-old woman from Barcelona, Noelia Castillo Ramos, has chosen euthanasia after enduring years of unimaginable physical and emotional pain.
Her story has sparked differing opinions, both within her family and beyond.
A life forever altered
Noelia’s life changed drastically after a traumatic assault, which eventually led her to attempt suicide by jumping from a fifth-floor window. She survived — but with severe, irreversible injuries that left her paraplegic.
From that point on, she endured constant pain, both physical and psychological.
Despite her family’s attempts to support her and find alternatives, Noelia ultimately decided to pursue euthanasia — a choice she stated she had been certain about for a long time.

“From the very start, I was quite clear about this,” she mentioned during an interview with the Spanish TV show Y Ahora Sonsoles.
“None of my family supports euthanasia. Naturally, since I’m a key support for the family. I’m the one leaving, while you all remain here with the pain. However, considering all the suffering I’ve endured over the years… I simply wish to depart in peace now and cease suffering, period.”
A legal struggle — and a conclusive verdict
Her choice ignited a heated legal battle. Her father attempted to halt the procedure, claiming that her life should be maintained despite her distress.
Nevertheless, both Spain’s Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights ruled in her favor, permitting the euthanasia to proceed under the nation’s 2021 legislation, which allows assisted dying in instances of severe and persistent suffering.
Judges concluded that her decision was made voluntarily and with complete understanding.
A family in conflict
The emotional impact on her family was significant.
Her mother, Yolanda, supported her daughter — even as she grappled with accepting her choice.
“I don’t agree, but I will always stand by her.”
On the other hand, her father remained opposed to the process right up until the very end.
In her last moments
As the days passed leading to her passing, Noelia held firm in her resolve. She candidly expressed her wish for tranquility after enduring years of agony.
“I simply want to leave in peace and end my suffering.”
She also revealed her thoughts on how she wished to confront her final moments:
“I’ve always believed I want to depart looking beautiful. I’ll wear my most beautiful dress and apply my make-up.”
Noelia’s mother, Yolanda Ramos, remained by her side throughout the night at Sant Camil Hospital, just hours before the procedure was set to commence at 6 p.m. local time — a process designed to “ensure a death free of suffering.”
Her father, Geronimo Castillo, along with other close family members, including her siblings and grandmother, also came to the hospital to be with her in her final hours.
Before the procedure, the 25-year-old reportedly asked for more time with her loved ones — a request that kept them together longer than originally planned.
Although the family was expected to step out and leave her alone with the doctor administering the injections around 5:30 p.m., they remained by her side for at least another half hour.
The procedure itself is believed to have ultimately begun around 6:30 p.m. local time. According to reports, the procedure lasted only minutes.
A debate that won’t fade
Noelia’s story has once again brought global attention to the complex and emotional issue of euthanasia.
Supporters argue that individuals enduring unbearable suffering should have the right to choose their own end. Critics, however, believe laws like these risk failing to protect the most vulnerable.
As one supporter put it:
“It’s her life and she has the right to decide.”
But for her family — and many watching around the world — the question remains far from settled.
